SLOPE PROTECTION WORK FOR WORLD'S TALLEST PIER BRIDGE, MANIPUR
INTRODUCTION
We at GTI, are a global
service provider of geo-synthetics, geotechnical engineering and ground
improvement techniques. We offer best-suited solutions for a variety of projects
ranging from roads, railways, hydraulics, mining & geo-environment sector.
Various certifications held by us are a testament to our quality assurance
systems that are considered industry benchmarks. Our clientele involves all
major Government institutions & industry majors like L&T, Tata
Projects, Vedanta.
For over a decade, we have
been devoting a great deal of time and effort to bring ease and innovation in
the field of Geo-synthetics. We embrace the challenges along our way and are
fascinated by them and that is what has enabled us to grow as market leaders in
the field of Geo-technical Engineering. Seeking exceptional solutions to
unconventional problems is what drives us everyday at GTI.
OVERVIEW
The bridge is being
constructed across the valley of river ljai near Noney, with the height of the
final pier being 141 metres. The total length of the Noney bridge will be 703
metres.
The bridge is a part of the
111-km Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal new broad gauge line project, a national project
which is set to be completed by 2022. The project also includes 45 tunnels, the
longest being 10.28 km, which will be the longest railway tunnel of the
northeast.
WHY
US
For their ongoing site
between Khongsang to Tupul, client asked Gabion Technologies India Pvt Ltd. to
make site visit, observe the problems & recommend the site locations for
slope protection work.
PROBLEMS
OBSERVED
The excavation stability is
affected by three to four systems of faults and joints. The rock is in a different
state of weathering and hardness throughout the depths investigated. Very Poor
percent of CR (Core Recoveries) and RQD (Rock Quality Designation) values have
been observed throughout the depths investigated.
The location is unstable
due to cutting & new slope failure at a 50-60-degree slope angle. There are
also few locations identified with cracks and unstable soil mass.
SOLUTION
PROVIDED BY US
Considering the type of
structures involved and the subsoil/ rock characteristics as determined from
the geotechnical investigations, Solid steel Anchors along with reinforced DT
mesh and coir mat was approved in rock strata consisting of highly weathered
and fractured sand stone/ silt stone strata.
Our design was vetted by IIT and slope protection treatment
was executed under our expert supervision
As
per the approved GFC drawing the following basic material was used:
GTI DT mesh reinforced
Geo-composite 3D Geo-mat Spec H
GTI Coir mat
GTI Galvanized SN type
Solid Steel Anchors
GTI PVC Drainage pipes.
GTI Semi-Perforated PVC
pipes
GTI GX Non-Woven Geotextile
CONCLUSION
Slope stabilization is a topic of serious concern to the geologists and engineers all over the world, as the slope instability and erosion of soil by water and wind are major environmental hazards. GTI Slope Stabilization and Rockfall Protection is an advanced technique in which the existing soil slopes and excavations are passively reinforced by insertion of relatively slender elements - fully threaded steel bars (GTI SDA/SN Anchors/Bolts as per soil properties). The grout is provided to prevent corrosion of steel bars as well as to transfer the load efficiently. GTI geosynthetic nettings are provided over the slip surface, which support the face between the nails and also act as the bearing surface for nail plates.
