The Indian government is planning a twin-tube 7-8 km tunnel through Kela Pass, the nation’s highest motorable pass at 18,600 ft, to ensure year-round connectivity between Leh and Pangong Lake. This ambitious INR 6,000 crore project aims to reduce travel time, enhance mobility for civilians and military, and boost tourism and defense operations in the region. Proposed by the Ladakh administration, the tunnel is under preliminary discussions with the Ministry of Home Affairs. If approved, it will transform accessibility in Ladakh, aligning with strategic goals to bolster national security and regional development while tackling extreme weather challenges.
