The pandemic, combined with the Ukraine crisis, created a mid-term opportunity for coal. The COP26 pledges were thrown to the wind as even the developed world increased its use of coal for electricity generation in order to cope with the scarcity of natural gas.

The COP27 made new commitments to reduce the use of fossil fuels. However, the current geopolitical realities provide little hope of an early resolution of the energy market's uncertainties. It means that in the short term, the developing world will have few options for ensuring energy security and fuel growth.
