ECL Unveils India's First Underground Coal Gasification Pilot Project
Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), operating under the Ministry of Coal's strategic directives, has launched India's pioneering Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) pilot initiative at the Kasta coal block in Jharkhand's Jamtara District. This innovative project aims to convert coal into valuable gases such as methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. These gases can then be utilized in the production of synthetic natural gas, various fuels, fertilizers, explosives, and other industrial products. The Ministry of Coal emphasizes the potential of UCG technology to tap into coal reserves that are not economically viable through conventional mining methods, positioning India at the forefront of advanced coal gasification technologies.
