BRO will build a trial road length in Arunachal Pradesh using steel slag, which can survive high rains and poor climate conditions. If successful, technology might be used to create lasting roadways in important regions.

This 1.2 km Hazira port connection stretch was an R&D initiative by CSIR-CRRI, a steel company, and the steel ministry.

The project is in India and Asia's record books.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will utilise steel slag for a stretch of the Mumbai-Goa highway, while the Indian Railways has sanctioned a large R&D project to CSIR CRRI to examine steel slag aggregate as railway ballast for track construction and maintenance.

The success of these pilots promises to decrease the need for aggregates, stone chips, and other raw materials in road and rail construction at a time when environmental concerns are limiting the supply of conventional raw materials.

The CRRI director stated this invention would lessen reliance on conventional resources for road building and safeguard the environment.
