The projected Wayanad tunnel route, which is expected to ease traffic congestion and shorten travel times between Kozhikode and Bengaluru, is currently being developed by the Keralan government. A memorandum of agreement was struck between the state government and the Norwegian government to transfer technology for the tunnel road, which will enable researchers better understand the makeup of rocks up to seven kilometres below the surface. A ropeway running parallel to the Thamarasserry ghat road was also suggested to the Center as part of the "Parvat Mala" concept, Riyas continued.

Since the tunnel project crosses portions of the Chembramala-Vellarimala Camel Hump complex, one of the Western Ghats' ecologically vulnerable zones, environmentalists have expressed major concerns about it.
