Maharashtra's Nagpur Metro-Rail Project: The Longest Double-Decker Viaduct In Asia
Maharashtra's Nagpur Metro-Rail Project built Asia's longest double-decker viaduct. The Maha Metro planned and designed this layered construction with the metro on top and an elevated roadway in the centre. This rib-and-spine design produced little road user disruption and was installed quickly.
The Nagpur Metro Rail Project was authorised in August 2014, and its North-South Corridor traverses Wardha Road (NH-361). NHAI sanctioned a 3.14km flyover on the same route to increase capacity. Both utilities were to be built on this major route through Nagpur. "Had these services been built on separate lines, they would have consumed twice the area, which is so scant, and given extra hardship to road users," says Dr Brijesh Dixit, MD of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation.
Gaddigodam's raised structure has four layers. In February, the Maha Metro launched an 85-m-long, 1,600-ton girder over a railway track in Gaddigodam. This was the first time a vast assignment was completed. The tallest ever girder launch is part of Kamptee Road (Gurudwara), part of the Maha Metro's North-South Corridor. The Nagpur-Delhi Railway section where the repair was done has about 150 trains each day.
