Thane Coastal Road-2 Gets MCZMA Approval; 680 Mangroves Face Permanent Destruction
The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has approved the original alignment for the 7.12 km long 'Thane Coastal Road-2' project. The project will pass through the eco-sensitive zone of the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, resulting in the permanent destruction of 680 mangrove trees.
In a meeting held on September 24, the authority recommended forwarding the proposal to the Union Ministry of Environment. It accepted the argument presented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) that there is no other viable route that could significantly reduce the loss of mangroves.
A total of 3,754 mangrove trees will be affected by the project. Of these, 680 mangroves, spread across an area of 1.7 hectares, will be permanently destroyed due to the construction of road piers. Another 1,053 mangroves may be damaged during the construction phase, though it is expected that they will be restored subsequently. Meanwhile, 2,021 mangroves will remain largely unaffected.
The MCZMA has mandated compensatory mangrove plantation, the implementation of environmental management measures, and regular monitoring. The MMRDA states that this elevated road will improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and shorten travel time. However, the project is still awaiting final legal approval.
