Railways to Develop Cargo Facilities at Nallampalayam and Vijayamangala
The Salem Division of Southern Railway has invited interest to develop cargo-handling facilities on railway land in Nallampalayam and Vijayamangalam. The aim is to increase freight capacity and generate additional revenue. This initiative, under Schedule III of the Railways' Goods Cargo Terminal (GCT) Policy, seeks to promote private participation in freight infrastructure development.
The proposed facility is expected to improve logistics services and provide businesses in the area with better access to rail transport. The notice was published on October 17, with bid submission and opening scheduled for October 31.
The proposal includes the preparation of a full project report under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. In Nallampalayam, the facility is planned to be built on 1.2 lakh sqm of railway land, with Coimbatore North being the nearest goods shed. J. Satish, a former member of the Railway Users' Committee, said the facility could help businesses handle bulk goods more efficiently. However, the type of cargo it will handle has not yet been disclosed.
