Green building certification highlights MMRCL’s focus on resource efficiency, multimodal connectivity and environmentally responsible urban mobility

Mumbai, 4 September 2026: The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), has presented a green building certification plaque to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL) for five stations on Metro Line 3.

The certification recognises the project’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure, resource conservation and environmentally responsible development.

The five stations covered under Underground Construction (UGC) Package No. 3 are:

• Jagannath Shankarshet Metro (Mumbai Central)
• Mahalaxmi Metro
• Science Centre
• Acharya Atre Chowk
• Worli

UGC Package No. 3 was executed by Dogussoma, with GreenTree serving as the green building consultant.

Embedding Sustainability into Metro Development

The certification reflects the project’s efforts to integrate sustainability into large-scale urban transport infrastructure while improving accessibility, conserving resources and strengthening environmental performance.

An MMRCL spokesperson said:

“Sustainability has been an integral part of the development of Mumbai Metro Line 3. The green certification of these five stations is a recognition of our efforts to integrate resource efficiency, environmental responsibility and sustainable practices into the project. We are committed to developing a metro network that not only enables efficient urban mobility but also contributes to a greener, more resilient and future-ready Mumbai.”

Metro Line 3 covers the Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ corridor and comprises 27 stations, including 26 underground stations and one at-grade station.

With the certification of these five facilities, IGBC has certified 16 MMRCL stations so far in 2026, highlighting the corporation’s continued efforts to advance green infrastructure across Mumbai’s expanding metro network.

Strengthening Multimodal Connectivity

A notable feature of the five certified stations is their integration with Mumbai’s wider public transportation network.

The stations are accessible from bus stops located within 100 metres and include dedicated drop-off zones. These facilities support convenient last-mile connectivity and encourage greater use of public transportation.

BEST—Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking—operates CNG-powered buses across the city. Electric buses have also been introduced on regular and feeder routes associated with Mumbai Metro Line 3, further supporting the transition towards low-carbon mobility.

Delivering Economic and Social Value

The project has recorded an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) of 17.89% and a Financial Internal Rate of Return (FIRR) of 3.2%.

These figures highlight the broader economic and social value of investing in sustainable mass rapid transit infrastructure, particularly in densely populated urban centres where efficient public transportation can reduce road congestion, travel time and environmental impact.

Senior Project Representatives Attend Plaque Presentation

The plaque presentation was attended by senior representatives from MMRCL, Dogussoma, GreenTree and IGBC.

Dogussoma was represented by Mr. Gopala Krishna, Project Manager, and Mr. Murali Krishna, MEP Manager. GreenTree participated as the green building consultant for the package.

Representing IGBC were Mr. Chitranjan Kaushik, Chairman of the IGBC Mumbai Chapter; Mr. Raja Reddy, Associate Counsellor; and Mr. Vikram Singha, Associate Counsellor.

Advancing Greener Urban Mobility

The recognition reinforces the role of green building principles in shaping the next generation of urban mobility infrastructure.

Mumbai Metro Line 3 connects important business, residential and institutional districts across the city. Integrating sustainability measures at the station level can improve resource efficiency, reduce environmental impact and support a cleaner, better-connected public transportation ecosystem.

Through the continued certification of its stations, MMRCL is demonstrating how large-scale metro infrastructure can contribute not only to more efficient mobility but also to Mumbai’s long-term environmental resilience.
