In conversation with Mr Vishal Surelia, a Managing Partner of Unipave Engineering Products. He shared his thoughts on Why road contractors should choose a Hydrostatic Paver over a Mechanical Paver now.
What is Hydro Static Paver & Mechanical Paver? Tell us the difference between both the products?
The hydrostatic paver finisher model HAP-045HD is one of our paver models. Instead of a mechanical drive, the HAP-045HD has a hydrostatic drive. Hydrostatic drive means a machine is powered by hydraulic pumps and motors, while mechanical drive is provided by a pulley and belt system with tyre coupling. Random mechanical pavers available in the market are mechanically driven and have three gear boxes. Because there is only one gearbox in our HAP-045HD, the maintenance costs are automatically reduced, which is the main benefit to our customers. Other maintenance parts on mechanical pavers include tyre couple, clutch, clutch plates, pulleys and belts, and so on, but there are none on the Unipave HAP-045HD due to the hydrostatic drive.
Furthermore, due to the hydraulic drive in the conveyor, the machine capacity has been increased from 100 TPH to 150 TPH, and a limit switch has been installed to control the material flow automatically.
Tell us, why client have to choose Hydro Static Paver instead of Mechanical Paver?
Actulley both the technologies are old. In compare to a mechanical system, the hydrostatic system is premium and sophisticated. The paver machines which come under hydrostatic sensor paver finisher category are already equipped with the hydrostatic transmission system. And generally the sensor pavers are considered for projects which are time bounded, require good paving quality and normally when the paving width requirement is more than 4.5 meters. But there is more to this, due to hydrostatic transmission in those machines, it provides high up time and it has very less system failure rate along with good fuel efficiency and better engine life compare to a mechanical transmission paver finisher. That is why we developed the HAP-045HD asphalt paver finisher, which is an ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) tested and approved machine. The ultimate beneficiary of the HAP-045HD paver finisher is customer, because the machine is able to provide low operating cost, low maintenance requirement/cost and high up time compare to the other options available in market.
Further, we have made it very simple to operate the HAP-045HD. It has hydraulic steering and a lever handle to drive the machine. The lever handle is attached to the main control panel and it has three functions and indicators for, forward drive, stop and reverse drive. HAP-045HD is also equipped with Hydraulic Conveyor Drive system and it makes the machine able to give the output up to 150 TPH, which is higher compare to the 100 TPH capacity of mechanical drive conveyor system provided in a mechanical paver finisher. The hydraulic conveyor drive system in HAP-045HD can also run in the reverse direction also, which helps the operator to do maintenance when any material gets stuck between the conveyor chain and its cover. There is also a function called auto material feeding system through which the machine can itself start and stop the conveyor chain as per the material requirement in the screed.
Now we are also providing an option of MOBA Sensor devices for automatic slope and grade control with the HAP-045HD model.
Also, it has came to our knowledge that some state governments are planning to reduce usage of mechanical Pavers in future projects and they will make it mandatory to use Hydrostatic Sensor paver finishers. So, it will be a wise decision of road contractors to select a Hydrostatic Paver machine instead of mechanical paver.
Also, tell us, why is Hydro Static Paver so costly? what is the reason behind the high cost of this product?
Because the high-quality hydraulic components we used in the machine mostly came from European countries, hydraulic component are expensive. Once imported, you must pay custom duties and surcharges. Hydrostatic systems have three major costliest components first are hydraulic valves (we used a solenoid valve system, which is more expensive than manual spool valves, which are typically used in mechanical pavers), second are hydraulic pumps and third one are hydraulic motors. the hydrostatic pavers are expensive, the advantage is that maintenance in hydrostatic machines occurs after a long period of time rather than immediately in mechanical transmission. If the customer makes timely changes hydraulic filter and oil, followed by the hydraulic components and machine, have a long service life. We have many customers who have been using our machine for 38 years, and 20 years of those years have been due to regular maintenance performed by the customers.
