An asphalt paver is a machine used to distribute, shape, and partially compact a layer of hot mix asphalt on the surface of a roadway, parking lot, or other area. Self-propelled asphalt pavers consist of two major components: the tractor and the screed. The tractor provides the forward motion and distributes the hot mix asphalt. The tractor includes the engine, hydraulic drives & controls, drive wheels or tracks, receiving hopper, feeder conveyors, and distribution augers. The screed levels and shapes the layer of asphalt. The screed is towed by the tractor and includes the leveling arms, moldboard, end plates, burners, vibrators, and slope sensors and controls.

The tractor unit is driven either by wheels or crawler tracks – both perform effectively under varying conditions. Wheeled pavers are suitable to complete a lot of overlay and repairs to surfaces as they are easier to move and can travel around the construction site faster. On the other hand, tracked pavers makes them suitable for use on unbound surfaces and when laying unbound base materials as they offer better stability and floatation due to the weight of the machine being evenly distributed across the surface area. Tracked pavers are also needed to lay extra wide sections and on steep inclinations.
